TAUNTON – Judge Lawrence Moniz on Friday granted Michelle Carter’s defense team a motion to delay her manslaughter case, setting a new trial date of June 5.
Carter is charged with encouraging her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III of Mattapoisett, to commit suicide. Carter was 17 and Roy was 18 in July of 2014, when Roy was found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning inside his pickup truck at the Fairhaven Kmart.
While Moniz granted the continuance, he scolded defense lawyers for bringing the request to court so close to the scheduled trial date of March 6.
Carter’s defense attorney, Joseph P. Cataldo, said he needed the extra time to examine hundreds of thousands of digital records in the case.
